Judgment as Labor
As production automates, the scarce skill is not output but discernment — knowing what should exist at all.
Work narratives still assume a factory metaphor: more units, faster cycles, higher throughput. Generative systems invert the bottleneck. Units are cheap. Coherence is expensive.
Judgment — taste, scope, refusal, alignment with consequence — becomes the primary labor of knowledge work. Teams reorganize around editors, curators, and directors rather than producers alone.
This is not a comfortable transition. Judgment is harder to measure than output. It exposes disagreement that automation once papered over. After Artificial documents the organizational forms trying to make discernment durable.
